The biblical view of divine love – which includes both empathy and act – creates a problem for the traditional Christian eternal torture chamber view of hell. Assuming that God loves us like a father his children, and the Christian eternal torture chamber view of hell, the problem of hell is that: 1. God is love. & 2. There is a hell. – are logically incompatible. I will present some medieval(ish) theodicies and their metaphysical assumptions—ways of reconciling (1) and (2)—and will argue than none is successful (including current revisions). Since many contemporary Christians maintain the traditional view of hell, this is a contemporary as well as a medieval problem.
