The complexity of religious experience proves to be a tough challenge for all academic and scientific disciplines attempting to define and analyze it more closely. The neuroscience of religion is one of the contemporary efforts to explore the relationship between religious experience and belief and the brain. In this chapter, we address the issue of experience as such, the complexity of religious experience from the perspective of world religions, theology, and philosophy, and then relate these insights to approaches, understandings, and studies in the field of the neuroscience of religion.
