Scientific inquiry at a theoretical level is directed at answering questions about what there is and how it behaves. Often, the answers to those questions then inspire further questions about the newly postulated things and laws: where did they come from? Such a pursuit must clearly end somewhere. I will consider what are rational grounds for thinking one has reached the bottom – the most fundamental level of reality – and how the fundamental elements themselves can be explained or understood.
